The fast bowler Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, aside from his injury, but further aspects," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
