The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a armed takeover in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" came to light.

This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of organizing to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brazil's capital, is located around 8 miles from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative American leader Donald Trump, causing him to implement a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being held in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will have a detention review on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to assassinate his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The conspiracy was prevented because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many his followers attacked and damaged government buildings in the federal district, the capital city.

The security forces took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The judges found that the rioters had been encouraged by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
