The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent prize-giving event approaches, you'll find a demand for the addition fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
