The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to halt the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, targets the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
